Position: Wildlife Nutrition Coordinator
Reports to: Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager
Organization: Toronto Wildlife Centre
Location: Currently based at Downsview Park, with plans to relocate to the Rouge National Urban Park during 2020

Start Date: Early spring 2020
Commitment: One year contract
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Position Summary:

The wildlife kitchen at Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) has been providing nutritious, species-specific food for thousands of patients annually, representing over 270 wild species. A healthy diet is a critical aspect of rehabilitation for wildlife. The logistics of delivering hundreds of fresh meals each day to hungry patients is challenging so TWC is looking for an experienced nutritionist to take the lead.

The Wildlife Nutrition Coordinator will take over the majority of diet-related responsibilities currently undertaken by the wildlife care team. This person will oversee and manage the preparation of individual daily diets, supervise and train kitchen volunteers and seasonal staff in properly preparing meals and caring for feeder colonies (e.g., fruit flies, minnows and mealworms), research ways to improve wild diets, and develop and implement processes to improve efficiency and reduce food waste


  • Management and oversight of the wildlife kitchen team
  • Oversight of the daily care of the feeder colonies (live animal)
  • Training interns and volunteers on proper food preparation processes and dietary needs
  • Improving food preparation routines, delivery systems and workflow in the kitchen
  • Coordinating meal preparations and distribution with the rehabilitation team
  • Preparing diets for the wild patients on a daily basis
  • Further research and refining of diets and the nutritional needs of the patients
  • Development and implementation of maintenance and cleaning routines for the kitchen and food preparation areas
  • Tracking food usage and waste throughout the centre
  • Maintaining food supply inventory as well as preparing food orders
  • Digitizing diet records and developing a maintenance plan
  • Working with the Fundraising Team on food donations

Education & Experience:

  • Completion of a graduate degree in Animal Nutrition with a minimum of 3 years research and supervisory experience or equivalent training and experience
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in feed formulation and feed quality control techniques, sanitation, and maintaining feeding programs of an array of taxa
  • Knowledge of Southern Ontario wildlife identification and natural history is a definite asset
  • Previous experience working with volunteers an asset


  • Must possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and strong problem solving, decision making and leadership skills
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able and willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing and dynamic work environment
  • Strong work ethic and desire to learn
  • Must be able to meet physical demands of the job, including the ability to lift a minimum of 25 kilos (55 lbs.) must be able to stand, sit, walk, stoop, crouch kneel and twist on a regular basis.
  • Must have proven mathematical skills.
  • Possess advanced computer skills.
  • Must possess working knowledge of the metric measurement system.


  • Full Class “G” driver’s license along with a good driving record is an asset
