Position: Animal Handler and Educator (seasonal with possibility of year-round)
Organization: Hands on Exotics
Location: Toronto, Ontario

Start Date: Multiple part time and full time seasonal positions to start in May and June.
Pay Rate: Dependent on experience plus mileage for vehicle use.

About Hands on Exotics: Hands on Exotics is an animal shelter based out of Toronto, Ontario which specializes in the care of exotic animals. Most of the animals we take in are either ex-pets, rescues or rehomed animals. To fund the care for these animals we offer a wide range of outreach programs.

Basic Job Description: Our Animal Handlers and Educators are the face of our organization. They handle our animals, facilitate hands-on interaction, and deliver educational programs for retirement homes, long-term care facilities, schools and childcare organizations, and private events.


  • Packing up animals at the shelter and transporting them to programs
  • Safely handling the animals during presentations
  • Facilitating hands-on interaction in a manner that is both safe for the animals and the participants
  • Delivering fun and engaging educational presentations
  • Cleaning travel carriers upon return to the shelter
  • This position may require some animal care shifts, which include cleaning animal enclosures, preparing and delivering specific diets, providing environmental enrichment to the animals, etc.


  • Post-secondary education in an animal related field an asset
  • Must have a valid Class-G driver’s license in good standing and access to a vehicle (larger vehicles like vans an asset but any vehicle will suffice)
  • Must be available to work shifts during the week as well as some weekends
  • Must be at least 18 years old, physically fit and able to lift at least 45lbs
  • Must be outgoing and capable of engaging audiences from ages 1-100+ (literally)
  • Experience handling a wide variety of animals including birds, mammals, and reptiles
  • Must be able to work well alone and as a part of a team
  • Must be quick thinking, good at problem solving, and able to take initiative
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and conduct themselves in a professional manner
