Position: Animal Husbandry Assistant
Organization: Pacific Northwest Raptors Ltd.
Location: Duncan, BC
Eligibility: under 30 years of age (see below)

The Raptors is hiring! We are a bird of prey organization, with the goal of raising awareness for birds of prey and promoting conservation. We are currently hiring for a position as an Animal Husbandry assistant at our facility in the Cowichan Valley.

Working at the human-wildlife interface, our mandate is twofold: 1) to develop innovative, sustainable and ecologically appropriate solutions to human-wildlife conflicts, and 2) to raise awareness for birds of prey and promote conservation. In addition to education and wildlife management, we work closely with a local nonprofit that effects wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

This is a contract, funded position for an applicant under thirty years of age, and qualified applicants must have a STEM diploma or degree. The position has a diverse range of responsibilities, including assisting with the medical care of raptors, working with our resident rescue parrots, and other general husbandry duties.

Daily tasks would include:

  • Assisting with the set up of our new hospital facility (it is moving in January), implementation of all procedures, ordering and setting up inventory, setting up ICU units, etc.
  • Day to day care of rescued parrots (all aspects); moving parrots into new facility (December/Janaury)
  • Reporting and paperwork related to rehabilitation and medical care
  • Daily care, treatment, and cleaning of rehabilitation facility
  • Assistance in education of the public on raptors, rehabilitation and environmental protection
  • Creation of hospital related documents/informational sheets

Qualified candidates would have the following:

  • Positive and energetic demeanor
  • Experience with animal or wildlife medicine.
  • Ability to work both alone and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and self-direction skills.
  • Solid computer literacy.
  • A degree in any STEM Field. (Required for funding)

Additional Qualifications include:

  • First aid training
  • Educational experience
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Database management skills.
  • Animal training experience (esp. avian training)

Starting wage is $17-19 dependent on experience. Position to start on November 15th or earlier, training provided. Criminal Record Check required.
