The Town of Cochrane is currently accepting applications for an intern to join the Animal Care Team at The Polar Bear Habitat (PBH). PBH is a rescue and conservation facility for polar bears, offering the highest standard of care in an environment as close to natural as we can provide. The facility also encompasses a unique Heritage Village depicting Cochrane in early settlement.
Reporting to the Manager of the Polar Bear Habitat, the position is responsible for providing exceptional day-to-day care for the animals in the collection, presenting interpretive and educational public presentations and answering questions from visitors.
The successful intern will work closely alongside the animal care team to assist them in providing outstanding care for our bears. You will learn about polar bear nutrition, veterinary care, behavioural training, enrichment, climate change education and so much more. If you have a passion for wildlife, are looking for experience in the animal care industry, and have graduated from college or university within the last three years, then this is the opportunity for you!
This position is supported by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. The ideal candidate must have graduated within the last three years from an accredited College or University. This position must be the first full-time employment opportunity in the candidate’s field of study. An appropriate field of study could include biological/ ecological/ environmental sciences, zoology, animal care, wildlife management, fisheries, forestry or equivalent. Must be able and willing to work all assigned shifts including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Bilingualism (English/French) would also be considered an asset but is not a requirement; English is required.
