Application for Forest School Educator Position 

Position: Part-Time Forest School Educator at Chelsea Forest School 
Organization: Chelsea Forest School
Location: Chelsea QC, 20 minutes outside Ottawa

Hours: September-June, Full or half day positions available

Salary: $16-18/hour dependent on experience

Background:

Chelsea Forest School has evolved from a traditional nursery school (Chelsea Cooperative Nursery School) that has been a Chelsea institution for over 50 years. We have been operating as a Forest School since 2013.

Our semi-rural community just outside of Ottawa-Gatineau is situated adjacent to Gatineau Park and nature has always played a large role to the families that we attract and in our programming.

Our programming follows the Forest School philosophy and is play based, child led and primarily outdoors. We believe passionately in the benefits to children, young and old of being immersed in nature.

We offer regular programming for preschoolers, and school age children. In addition we run programs on PD days.
Our school is a cooperative and is managed by a volunteer board of parents.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Forest School Practitioner’s Certificate (completed or underway)
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma, Teaching Degree or Equivalent Experience
  • Bilingual
  • Experience working with children in an outdoor setting
  • Current First Aid with CPR C (or able to complete prior to September 2018)
  • Clear criminal/vulnerable sector check
  • An enthusiasm for the outdoors in all kinds of weather
  • Physical ability to be active and on your feet all day while carrying a pack
  • Team player
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to take initiative
  • An understanding of the adult role in child led learning
  • An understanding of the benefits of risk taking
  • Interest in learning and improving upon basic outdoor skills such as fire building, shelter making, knots
  • Familiarity of local flora and fauna or willingness to learn
  • Ability to perform dynamic risk assessments while thinking and acting quickly
  • Tons of enthusiasm!

Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the teaching team, plan and implement a dynamic Forest School program that is based on the observations of the children, the learning environment, and the learning goals that have been established
  • Prepare the daily learning materials and areas as necessary
  • Ensure the safety of all participants at all times, including but not limited to forest play, ravine climbing, water play, traffic situations, flora and fauna.
  • Document observations of each child's interests and progress 
  • Perform risk assessments as needed, and review each season
  • Responsible for program tools and equipment. This includes, care maintenance, restocking, and storing appropriately at all times.
  • Communicate with parents effectively and in a timely manner, in person, by email, or phone regarding the program and the progress of their children
  • Attend staff trainings, meetings and parent evenings as required
