Positions: Wildlife technician intern
Type: primarily volunteer positions with a very few grant positions see below
Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge is a rehabilitation center located in a rural area 1 ½ hours northeast of Toronto, Ontario Canada. We accept all wildlife (birds and mammals) with the exception of raccoons. We treated over 6300 patients this past year.
A very few paid positions are available via a partial grant for those who:
(1) Are available to commit to a 16 week term beginning May 1
(2) Are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Canada
(3) Meet the other eligibility requirements upon application for the grant
For those not able to commit to 16 weeks or those who do not qualify for the grant, or wish to have a better chance of attaining an internship, they can apply for 2 or 4 month internships as a volunteer. These would start May 1, July1, September 1.
This internship is fast–paced, intense, and comprehensive and is a great "hands on" learning opportunity for anyone interested in wildlife rehabilitation. Although primary responsibilities will be in infant care and husbandry, diagnostics, fluid therapy, medications, nutrition, wound management, physiotherapy, enrichment and record keeping are also areas to which you will be exposed and heavily involved. Surgeries are also performed onsite by a wildlife veterinarian and can be observed and assisted in by interested parties. We are also an accredited veterinary facility for wildlife.
For more information on what we do, please go to our website at http://www.shadesofhope.ca or on facebook.
The applicants must be passionate about wildlife and able to work long hours (including split shifts). Five day weeks of up to 40-50 hour weeks are required. The physical ability to lift and spend time on your feet is required. As we are committed to taking on the hard cases, you would need to be mentally able to withstand difficult losses along with exhilarating success. The ability to work in a team environment, yet not requiring constant supervision is imperative. Being able to stay calm in hectic situations, using common sense, being able to focus on the task at hand for long periods if necessary, accuracy in record keeping, and prioritizing are all important skills in this position. All applicants must be 18 years or older and fluent in English – both spoken and written.
For those interns volunteering, accommodations are free. For those paid, rent will be charged. Accommodations are provided a short distance away in a large 4 bedroom house with each bedroom shared among interns. Wireless internet, air conditioning, cable, laundry and kitchen facilities are all included. For those without transportation, it will be arranged for you. Food is not provided. We are a little over an hour to a large city (Toronto), and about 15 – 20 minutes from other towns which provide shopping. In town (5 minutes away), there is banking, restaurants, drug store, chiropractic and dental clinics, doctor’s office and some groceries.
