SCHOOL GARDENS

Positions: Assistant Facilitators (volunteer)
Organization: EarthBites
Location: Based in Vancouver BC. Candidates to travel to a school location for approximately 37 weeks, from September - June.

EarthBites is looking for passionate, dedicated and reliable Volunteer Assistant Facilitators to help deliver our workshops to elementary school students. Join our team of dedicated facilitators and volunteers to inspire and educate students and staff as they learn to grow their own food and create healthy snacks.

In light of the current public health crisis, EarthBites is following the guidelines set out by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Provincial Health Officer of British Columbia, and the Childcare & Schools guide by BC’s Centre for Disease Control. All of our programs will have procedures in place to ensure the safety of students, facilitators, and volunteers during our workshops.

About EarthBites

Over the last 10 years the EarthBites team have worked with VSB elementary students & teachers - creating a sustainable school garden where everyone can learn life skills to nourish themselves. We currently partner with 5 VSB schools and we work closely with PACs, teachers and students, transforming their school garden space into outdoor classrooms that are fully utilized and integrated into the school curriculum.

Volunteering with EarthBites will allow you to develop skills, experience & confidence in: Growing & harvesting food in an urban school garden; managing & maintaining a school garden; creating nutritional snacks with foods from a school garden; crafting with the seasons, and classroom management skills.

Position Description

As a Volunteer Assistant Facilitator, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Assist the EarthBites Facilitator with the delivery of the program content (lessons and activities)
  • Assist students with garden and nutrition based activities
  • Learn how to use inquiry-based teaching techniques to encourage curiosity and discussion among students
  • Guide students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 in learning about growing food and making healthy snacks
  • Assist with the setup and clean up of equipment and materials at the beginning and/or end of each day
  • Carry out tasks associated with garden maintenance and beautification.
  • Be considered for paid facilitator positions when they come available

Qualifications Required

  • A passion for working with youth (aged 5-13)
  • Experience and/or interest in gardening and nutrition
  • Desire and ability to work outdoors in all weather
  • An aptitude for following workshop outlines, recipes, and instructions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector within the last five years or ability to obtain and pass a clear criminal record check

Time Commitment:

This position is based in Vancouver elementary schools. The minimum commitment is one 3 hour shift per week for the school year (September - June). Hours are either 8:45am - 12:00pm, or 12:00pm - 3:00pm each week. Volunteers must also be available for volunteer training the first week of September, 2021 (exact date and time to be determined).
