Siva Ashram is a small spiritual community rooted in yogic philosophy and interspiritual exploration. We share a lifestyle of group spiritual practices, meditation, yoga, karma yoga (work), prayer, study and personnal development workshops. We operate as a big spiritual family, some of us have a long term commited to this path and call themselves neo-monastics, some are here as volunteers/pilgrims, staying with us for a few months or a few weeks, to step back from modern life, do some emotionnal and spiritual self healing and get clarity about their life path.
As an interspiritual community, we explore the teachings and practices from the world's major religions traditions (hindu, christian, buddhist, Islamic and jewish), expanding our mind and hearts while deepening our personnal relationship to the Divine in his/her many faces and names.
As an ashram, we are also deeply rooted in yogic and vedic (hindu) tradition. In that regard, we tend to aproach other faiths initially from a yogic perspective, and gradually dive deeper to experience as much of the pure aspects of each tradition as we can. Engaging playfully with seemingly contradicting teachings to develop our own understanding and philosophical flexibility.
Our lifestyle is a mix between the life of a monk and that of a 24/7 personnal development workshop. This makes our group energy very cohesive, loving and high spirited. When you join us as a volunteer, you become part of our community, giving you a chance to tap into the various aspects of our life while giving us a chance to get to know you, and to grow through our daily interactions. We love sharing what we love and we also do need some extra help to run the ashram smoothly.
As a neo-monastic community, we sustain ourselves through a work exchange agreement with an accomodation business which was established on the same property a few years ago. This business currently has 5 cabins: a tipi, a tree house and 3 bubbles.
You will learn to practice karma yoga, which is where actual work happens.. this is the art of being peaceful on the inside while being active in daily activities. Turning work into a spiritual practice comparable to meditation.
We meditate twice a day and practice singing and prayers in the morning. There are often workshops at night on various topics such as personnal development, meditation, yogic practices etc.
Volunteering will take place with cabin maintenance (cleaner), water and firewood provisioning (driver), ashram maintenance, forest trail maintenance and potentially some gardening and construction work, based on your skills and interest.
Volunteers stay in private rooms and we offer 3 vegetarian meals per day.
You will live with a group of about 6-8 people living in an ashram / spiritual community setting with shared values and daily practices.
We are established on a 34 acres plot of woodland, one hour north of Montreal, in a beautiful, densely forested area.
We also have some pets: donkey, pony, mule, pigs, cats.. which you could help with.
Our site is entirely drug, cigarette, alcohol free.
