Type: training program with food & accom, tuition fee / potential profit-sharing (see below)

Farm: Twisted Roots Farm
Location: Judique, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (with food and accommodation, see below)

The School of Wyld Roots is a year-long immersion into the life of farming, nature-based dialogue, land stewardship, and self discovery. Follow the seasonal cycle of this hands-on learning journey, where we are co-creating the foundational future of a Holistic Learning Cooperative here at Twisted Roots Farm.

Students will delve into:

  • Permaculture Design and Methodology
  • Regenerative Agriculture
  • Off-grid Living
  • Outdoor Education / Bushcraft Skills
  • Food Security
  • Forestry / Bandsaw Mill
  • Economic Development
  • Leadership
  • Community Living
  • Natural and Conventional Construction
  • Communication Skills

The intake date for the program is March 21st, the first day of Spring. During the first six months of the program, participants will be engaged in training/certification, learning theory, adjusting and adapting to off-grid life, mastering farm routines, and understanding the logistics and key components of running a small business.

Students will learn and receive certifications in:

  • Permaculture Design Certification Course
  • Sociocracy for All, Empowered Learning Circle
  • WHMIS Certification
  • Standard First Aid Certification
  • Ladder Safety and Fall Protection Certification
  • Chainsaw Training and Certification
  • Food Safety Certification
  • Firearms Safety Course and Certification

Following this six month period of intensified hands-on learning, students will transition from a place of theory and practice to more direct involvement in the farm as a business through a profit sharing model based on the success of the farm from the previous months work, dedication, and initiatives. Opportunities will be available to those who wish to continue on with the farm. The second year will be focussed on “teacher training,” working with new students, additional hands-on work delivering programs to the community, and continuing to develop the economic potential of the farm. This could be in the form of a formalized cooperative.

Tuition $4,000 CAD includes:

  • Weekly in-house theory, teaching, curriculum delivery, and mentoring
  • Food and accommodation
  • Certifications and training

Scholarships may be available to those students who demonstrate a financial need.

Who Should Apply

We are looking for folks who see themselves as teachers, continuing to guide others along this path. You will continue to add to the foundation of this place and guide its future. You are a self-starter with innovative ideas and the fortitude to put those ideas into action. Our mission is to create a cooperative of guides and mentors who will continue this work in a time where our culture needs to remember many of these forgotten skills and make them relevant to the times.
