Positions: Classroom Volunteer
Organization: Growing Chefs
Location: Vancouver, BC

Lead a hands-on, interactive classroom gardening and cooking program that teaches kids about healthy food and healthy food systems!

About the Program: Growing Chefs runs a Classroom Gardening and Cooking Program in elementary schools to get kids excited about growing, cooking, and eating good, nutritious food. We believe in the importance of connecting young children to their food through hands-on learning, getting their hands in the dirt, and teaching them how their food choices impact their personal health and the health of the environment.

We are looking for volunteers who have an interest in growing, cooking, and eating to share their passion for good food. And that's where you come in. In our program, volunteers are paired with a classroom to give students hands-on gardening and cooking experience while teaching them about healthy food and healthy food systems. Apply By: August 15th, 2022
Start Date: mid-October, 2022

Location: An elementary school near you! We work with many schools all across the Lower Mainland and will pair you with a school that works for you. We need volunteers for classes in Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond.

Hours: 2 hours every week for 5 consecutive weeks

  • A love of good food, and a passion to share it.
  • Experience working with children is not required but is an asset.
  • All volunteers must be able to pass a Criminal Record Check.
  • No experience is necessary, we provide full training on classroom management, and a fully developed lesson and activity plan.
  • We acknowledge we are still in a pandemic. Please be aware that certain precautions (such as mask wearing) may be required in accordance with the requirements and guidelines set by the school district you are placed within.

Why Volunteer with Growing Chefs?

  • Fun and Engaging: Go right into the classroom, get students' hands in the dirt, play games, plan recipes, get kids excited about trying new foods, and help them fall in love with vegetables.
  • Great Hands-On Experience: Gain experience teaching and working with kids as you lead students through lessons about how to grow and cook healthy food. It's a great opportunity to build your communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Build Connections in the Food Industry: Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds but the vast majority are those in the professional food industry who are passionate about food education. Meet and work alongside local chefs, nutritionists, and urban agriculturalists and start building your own connections in the local food community.
  • Lasting Impacts: Students show an improved appreciation of vegetables, knowledge of where food comes from, and how food grows after engaging with our volunteers in the classroom.

Program Schedule:

  • The program starts mid-October, and runs until late November, every week for 5 weeks. Programs run in the mornings from 10:30am to 12:30pm on a weekday that works for your schedule.
  • Before being placed in the classroom, you will join us for a volunteer training session in August or September. More information about volunteer training will be provided after you apply to volunteer.
  • Teams of three to four volunteers are paired with an elementary school classroom where they follow detailed lesson plans from our Growing Chefs Classroom Gardening and Cooking Curriculum.
