Volunteer at Smoothwater and help us ready our facility for a busy summer season! We provide free room and board in exchange for 4 hours of your help per day. We particularly enjoy when volunteers have special skill sets to share.

In your free hours may hike, paddle, and explore Temagami, or simply enjoy the fresh air and sunshine at our lakefront location

• 20 hrs/week
• Room and board provided at no cost.
• Period: May 1, 2022 to June 30, 2022. We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of 2 weeks, anytime between May 1 and June 30. Extended opportunities may be available.

About Us

Smoothwater Outfitters provides outfitting services for canoeing and hiking trips of varying lengths, ranging from hours to weeks. Services include canoe rentals, gear rentals, complete outfitting packages, route consultations, and shuttles. We also provide accommodations and meals on-site at our lodge, focusing on immersing guests in northern culture through local foods, regionally- specific decor, and person-to-person conversations about the history and unique character of the Temagami region.

Volunteer activities:

Outdoor Work: Landscaping, planting, grass cutting, debris collection, building maintenance, painting, construction projects, organizing canoes and paddles, running errands.

Indoor Work: Kitchen help, cleaning, camping gear maintenance and organization, construction projects, computer work.

Assets:

Work environment: Smoothwater is a dynamic small business that caters to canoe trippers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Our clients are typically thoughtful, easygoing, and sociable, and a pleasure to interact with. Francis, John, and Johanna – our permanent staff – are receptive and responsive. Open communication is encouraged. We value enthusiasm and new ideas. We try to approach every situation with good humour and open minds. We ask the same of others.

*Room and board includes a room in our staff house (or a small private cabin depending on preference and availability), as well as three meals per day and snacks. We are beloved for our food! We do not provide alcoholic beverages, and we ask that volunteers provide their own specialty treats such as candy or chips. Amenities include swimming dock, sauna, firepit, and library. Canoes are available to use.
