VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT FOR WINTER/SPRING NATURE SCHOOL 2024

Position: Nature School Volunteer

Duration: Interested volunteers must be available to assist with at least one program per week for at least 3 months.

OVERVIEW OF VOLUNTEER POSITION

Earth Path is a non-profit organization based in the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation, or so-called Ottawa region. Since 2013 we have been dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships between people and the natural world through transformative nature programs. We offer these programs for people from all walks of life, including youth, teens, adults, educators, families, and schools. We offer these programs out of two beautiful locations: at Just Food Community Farm in Ottawa, ON, and Eco Echo Environmental Campus in Wakefield, QC.

As a Volunteer with Earth Path you will become immersed in a community of nature lovers who are passionate about learning and inspired to teach children about the wonders of nature. Volunteering will provide you opportunities to hone your survival skills, deepen your naturalist knowledge, learn unique mentoring techniques and pedagogy, and support children on their nature connection journey. We also accept co-op or intern placements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist staff in the planning and facilitation of Earth Path’s nature school programs for children ages 4-14;
  • Maintain an inclusive, supportive, and safe space for all participants;
  • Attend volunteer training and meetings with supervisor, as needed;
  • Show up on time and prepared, at least 30 mins before the program start time;
  • Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

QUALITIES WE SEEK IN OUR VOLUNTEERS

  • A desire to deepen your naturalist knowledge;
  • An interest in learning teachable wilderness skills (e.g. whittling, cordage-making, shelter-building, or fire-building);
  • An enjoyment of working with children in a creative, engaging way;
  • Good time management skills;
  • Good organizational skills;
  • An ability to assess and manage risk in an outdoor environment;
  • An openness to learning, sharing ideas, and receiving feedback;
  • An ability to adapt and be resourceful.
