Hiring: Nature retreat / travellers hostel hosts
Type: full-time paid, seasonal employment
Dates: July 1 – October 31

Host: Wolf Den Nature Retreat
Location: Algonquin Park, Ontario
Housing: includes housing (see below)

Spend an amazing four months living and working at the edge of world-famous Algonquin Park as a host at the Wolf Den Hostel & Nature Retreat. Use time off to explore the wonders of the park by canoe, kayak, bike, hiking and camping.

This is as much a roommate wanted ad as much as it is a job posting.  With the ongoing pandemic, we have our own small bubble community here at Wolf Den.  There’s work to be done and fun to be had.

Work Terms:

July 1-October 31.  Earlier start date or longer duration considered.  Free housing, utilities, internet, use of canoes, kayak, bike, sauna.  Official full-time payroll.  Gross take home pay after deductions $1800/month.

For 2021, the main lodge is closed to the public. The lodge is our communal staff house. You will have a private, furnished room.  Other main house areas:  large, fully equipped kitchen, two indoor dining areas, library/lounge, multiple indoor showers, and washrooms.

We have river access with dock, canoes, kayaks, for our guests and staff.  Great swimming.

We have an egalitarian approach to teamwork at the Wolf Den. All staff (including the owners) are involved in every aspect of keeping the Den clean and happy.

The personal touch is important for our guests.  Ideally, our staff are eager to engage our clients in conversation and find enjoyment in social settings.  If you need your own space and don’t enjoy being around people, perhaps this isn’t the greatest match. Social aspects of the jobs: phone calls, checking guests in and out, keeping an eye on the campfire at night, chatting with guests about their adventures in the park, offering trail and canoe route tips, and answering questions about park ecology and history.

Daily team responsibilities include cleaning the accomodations and outdoor public areas, laundry, answering phone calls, taking reservations, welcoming guests, responding to emails.  Other opportunities if you like odd jobs, grounds keeping, gardening, fixing stuff, marketing, splitting wood. Maintaining a clean and orderly living space in our lodge home is an additional consideration outside of work hours.

Requirements and Attributes:

  • Friendly, outgoing and able to multi-task and work hard
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with little supervision
  • Additional languages are a an asset
  • Highly responsible & reliable
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a sometimes fast-paced environment, and to maintain motivation in slower-paced times
  • Ability to work and live cohesively with fellow colleagues as part of a team
  • Most importantly, love of our natural world!

Final Notes:

We are interested in people committed to joining our bubble.  We are all responsible for each other in the bubble.  Joining us may mean some sort of special quarantine measures for the first week or two.  Perhaps living in our tiny house rather than with us in the lodge, wearing masks indoors with us, and limiting inside interactions.  We'll throw a "welcome to our bubble" party for you after that period!

We wear masks when entering any indoor spaces other than our house.  We take the pandemic seriously on a personal and professional level.  The Wolf Den wouldn’t be able to operate otherwise.  If you hope to return home on weekends or to have visitors share our indoor space, joining us this year is not ideal.  Hopefully next year.

Living and working together takes a special commitment to communication, empathy, understanding, and sharing.   Your work space is also your living space.  This is not the same as going to work and then returning home.  Work bleeds into home life.  If you need separation, this is not for you.  You will have your own bedroom as your personal space and there is plenty of nature for personal time and space.

Food and meals are not part of your pay.  We enjoy creating and eating meals together and hope to share with you and be mindful of your dietary needs.

You don’t need a vehicle to live and work here.   We make plenty of trips into town for groceries, the nearest town is 30 minutes by bicycle, and there are outdoor adventures right out the front door. No need to drive into the park.

Individuals, couples, families and those with pets welcome.  The owners live nearby and have a five-year-old boy and a sweet older dog.
