Positions: Internships and Student Placements
Company: Anarres Natural Health Apothecary
Location: on-site at Bloor West near Dufferin Station, Toronto ON

I am reaching out to kindred spirits in case you are seeking hands-on experience within an apothecary in Toronto where we sell (and grow) herbs, tinctures and botanical body care products. We've had successful interns from schools of herbalism, nutrition and cosmetology. Students choose their area of interest, schedule and hands on learning with myself, Tracey TieF, Certified Natural Health Practitioner, Green Witch and folk herbalist. Previous volunteers and Apprentices are now:

  • Operating their own shops (ex Pretty Clean in Toronto)
  • Helping farmers to create value added products
  • Running successful private counselling practices
  • Supporting themselves through artisinal creation, in home and online based businesses
  • Rounding out their cosmetology and aesthetics education
  • Practicing as doulas, midwives, massage therapists and natural health educators

You can learn more about our parallel Apprenticeship and Work Exchange Programs here. Our Aromatherapy Certification Program focuses on hands-on body care making skills and prepares students to use herbs, essential oils and other botanicals responsibly, safely and ethically.

Student placements and interns are invited and encouraged to attend all workshops free of any cost, and earn certificates.

Students also receive 50% off all essential oils, 20% off every other product in store.

Your work and learning at Anarres can be:

  • Project based (ex Coordinate our Bulk Herb Zone!, or Update our online Materia Medica, or Catalogue and Relabel our 500 essential oils)
  • Flexible shifts Tuesdays through Saturdays, 4 hours or 8 hours between noon and 7:30pm.

You can learn by doing:

  • How to price ingredients and products for resale
  • How to make all sorts of body care from toothpaste to serums to fancy lotions and creams
  • How to choose packaging, and how to package safely
  • How to compose recipes that are simple, affordable, safe and effective.
  • How to cost out and price finished products for retail and wholesale
  • How to manage and rotate inventory, and how ordering, invoicing and setting up accounts works
  • Measuring and weighing tecniques, scaling and revision of recipes
  • How to prepare to make a product, santtizing, equipment to use production tecniques, and how to clean up afterwards
  • How to restore used bottles and jars for reuse and retailing (secrets of label removal and expert dishwashing).

Anarres Apothecary has hosted students and interns from all over the world including Taiwan, Japan, Mali, Uganda and Mexico. Here is an email I received from a Taiwanese student of Traditional Chinese Medicine "Dear Tracey, I'm back home now, thanks for the wonderful experience you brought to me in Toronto this time. You're such a good teacher with an excellent personality and great humour, and with your nice store, all make my journey unforgettable and amazing. Every time having a conversation with you really change my mind gradually on some global issue that people concerned about, even though I still can't catch all the words you said, but I finally start to have an eye on the things I can do to our Mother Earth, and ready to put them into action. The passion and perseverance you have for life really moved me, and I will definitely try my best to live a fabulous life, just like you. And I know I can do that! ... The advance lotion making lesson ... the time we spent in the garden, the products we made at the store... I will keep all these memories with me. TAKE CARE BEST WISHES..."

A Thank You card from a Canadian homesteading intern: "Dear Tracey, I just wanted to write to thank you for allowing me to spend time at Anarres. I learned a great deal, and you were a wonderful teacher. I will be sure to put all this new knowledge to good use up North. Thanks again for your time, your effort, and your amazing wisdom..."
