Positions: Volunteer Contributors
Organization: Open Food Network Canada
Location: anywhere in Canada (main office is in St. Agatha, On)

Are you interested in food + tech?

Open Food Network is a global network of people and organizations working together to develop open and shared resources, knowledge and software to support a more sustainable and ethical food system. You can learn more about our global project here.

At the core of everything we do is a belief that creating a new food system requires a new way of operating. This is why we create open source solutions, communicate with transparency, and hold everything we create as part of the Commons – it doesn’t belong to a single entity, but instead to a community.

We launched a Canadian instance of Open Food Network and incorporated as a national not-for-profit in 2017. We’ve stayed kind of quiet until now. We’ve been doing lots of behind the scenes work on our platform and on our global governance processes. But now we are blooming!

We are looking to build a national team of volunteers to work with farmers and makers, community food initiatives, food hubs, buying clubs, farmers markets….. to deploy our software platform (think: e-commerce – with lots of twists) in Canada and build a Canadian OFN community that can support ethical food access and distribution in local communities across the country.

Contributions Needed in Canada:

  • Board Members — if you are interested in the digital space as it pertains to developing sustainable and fair food systems in Canada - this is your opportunity!!! We are structuring a pan-Canadian board of directors.
  • Website manager & social media team  help us build out our wordpress site (we use Divi) with case studies, blogs, social media posts, etc. In the summer we hope to gather together a social media team to develop the OFN-Can communication strategy.
  • Translator  our platform is bilingual - are you willing to spend a few hours each month to update our translation for Francophones?
  • Friend raising/Fundraising  help us build networks and connect with food and farming communities, maker networks, other open source communities…. We welcome your project ideas.
  • User Support team  learn the platform, use it yourself if you wish and support others in the process. This role includes reporting bugs, curating needs that emerge from the community. If you are thinking of using the platform yourself - why not offer some hours to help others?

You can learn more through a face to face event:

In an on-line meeting: Monday March 23, Tuesday March 24, 2:00 pm (EST). Email us, and we'll send login details.
