VOLUNTEER POSITION

Position: Food Up Front Communications Coordinator
Organization: Transition Toronto
Location: being in Toronto or nearby is preferred, but not necessary

Food Up Front is a Transition Toronto project that delivers garden-starting seed packages to people in Toronto wanting to convert their lawns into gardens. Its objectives include addressing food insecurity, building skills, and increasing the environmental and local food sustainability in the communities it serves.

Food Up Front requires a communications coordinator for it’s 2021 season who can use their administrative and communications experience to promote the project. Promotion would include:

  • Emails to Transition Toronto subscriber lists and other newsletters run by allied groups
  • Coordinating and executing communications to respondents interested in seeds using a variety of tools including google forms and spreadsheets
  • Working with the Food Up Front Logistics Coordinator and delivery volunteers to ensure seeds get to those who need them.

Food Up Front is specifically interested in supplying seeds to those who are new gardeners or have not yet converted their lawns into gardens. Communications will focus on that objective. The Communication Coordinator will also need to work with the Food Up Front Social Media Coordinator to ensure communications are consistent and well-timed. The Communications Coordinator is expected to be substantially invested in the success of the Food Up Front project and able to work with the team to ensure that success.

Commitment:

  • 3 hours of introductions to the project and the team, of briefing on duties, and familiarization with the existing project tools
  • 4 hours per week of email duty covering content for mass emails and bulk responses to those interested in seeds beginning immediately and possibly extending to the end of June 2021
  • Coordination with other team members, receiving and using data from the Logistics Coordinator, and staying in touch with the plans of the wider team

Outcomes:

  • Effective newsletter content received by target audiences
  • Records of those interested in receiving seeds, (bulk) emails ensuring that interest is substantial and legitimate, recorded confirmation of substantial and legitimate interest reported to Logistics Coordinator
  • Uptake from those who really need the services of Food Up Front (as opposed to, for example, interest mainly coming from those who are seasoned gardeners and have means of obtaining seeds themselves)

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Communications experience and ability to compose and manage communications with customers in a professional manner
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Attention to detail and ability to work in a well-organized and systemic manner
  • Commitment to project success

Time Commitment and Location:

  • Work can be done virtually
