BOARD POSITION / VOLUNTEER

Needed: Board Members, Board of Directors
Title: Director at Large
Type: nonprofit/charity board positions / unpaid
Organization: Mind Your Plastic
Location: anywhere in Canada

Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and waste reduction and committed to making a positive impact on our planet? Mind Your Plastic (mindyourplastic.ca), a federally registered Canadian charity, is looking to add two new members to its Board of Directors.

About the Organization:

Mind Your Plastic is working towards eliminating plastic pollution in Canada, with the goal of promoting a truly circular economy and minimizing plastic waste through intervention before it enters the environment. The organization enacts this goal through three main programs:

  1. Municipal Plastic Free Events Policy. Mind Your Plastic works with municipalities to develop policy limiting plastic waste at events within their jurisdiction. Policies can range in their depth and scope, with the end goal of promoting reuse. The Town of Ajax, with ~127,000 inhabitants, recently issued a press release about their work with Mind Your Plastic.
  2. Circular Economy Ambassador Program. Mind Your Plastic works with schools and students across Canada to organize plastic clean-up events, with all data tracked and remitted to the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This is the organization’s only program that cleans up, rather than reduces, plastic pollution, but informs and educates Canada’s youth to reduce future plastic waste. Last year, Mind Your Plastic organized ~3,000 students in all provinces to participate in the Circular Economy Ambassador Program.
  3. Plastic Awareness and Reduction Toolkit. Mind Your Plastic works with businesses to implement plastic reduction policies, with a current focus on retail, manufacturing, food service, and office and administration businesses.

The organization is supported by a three-person executive team, a four-person scientific advisory panel, a currently three-person Board of Directors (expanding to five), and a volunteer team.

Responsibilities:

On Mind Your Plastic’s Board of Directors, you will play a vital role in guiding and supporting our organization's operations, strategy, and fundraising efforts. In particular, the organization is looking for experienced directors with a particular focus on candidates with either legal (with areas of expertise including contract / corporate law, intellectual property, and tax law) or fundraising (ideally with individual donors, government, and corporate partners) experience.

Qualifications:

  • A deep passion for environmental sustainability and a commitment to reducing plastic pollution.
  • A track record of accomplishment within your profession, coupled with experience in either the legal field or in fundraising for nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and ability to navigate complex and multifaceted issues with limited resources.
  • Well-established networks within government or business, with the ability to leverage these connections for the benefit of the organization.
  • Dedication, reliability, and a willingness to actively contribute to board meetings, committees, and initiatives.

To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter outlining your relevant experience and why you are interested in joining Mind Your Plastic’s Board of Directors. We look forward to learning more about you!
