Based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Neighbours for the Planet (NftP) is a non-profit organization that is working to bring about changes to help tackle and resolve the climate crisis. It is doing this by encouraging collective action and working with elected officials to advocate for appropriate policies. A positive and measurable impact on communities is our aim.

NftP is seeking nominations to fill one volunteer Board Member position with a passionate and enthusiastic individual who is able to dedicate their time and expertise to support this non-profit organization’s goals and objectives.

The Role

The Treasurer will provide fiscal oversight of NftP in line with good practice and in accordance with governing documents and legal requirements. The treasurer will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place. As a member of the Board of Directors they will report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial matters of the organization.

The Treasurer oversees the preparation of reports to the Board detailing income, expenditures, and asset values and presents a financial report at each board meeting. The position also provides oversight and guidance on preparation and completion of the annual audit, special financial reports, and tax submissions as required.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide fiscal oversight of NftP, including audit, budgeting, investing, financial reporting, risk management, and related policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with auditor & report to the board financial irregularities, concerns or opportunities
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports
  • Ensure month-end procedures are accurate and timely
  • Manage accounting for inventory, accounts receivable and payables
  • Act as one of the signing officers of the organization with respect to banking and investment transactions


Commit to volunteer for approximately 10 hours per month. Open to a two-year board role with the possibility of renewal for a second term. Attend at least 10 of the 12 board meetings on an annual basis, in York Region, or virtually.


  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and strategic directions
  • Professional expertise in accounting and finance management
  • Certification: CPA (CGA or CMA equivalent) an asset
  • A high level of administrative, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Knowledgeable about board governance and previous experience is an asset
