About EnviroCentre

EnviroCentre is Ottawa’s largest not-for-profit environmental organization focused on climate action. For over 20 years, EnviroCentre has delivered programs that provide residents, businesses and communities with practical solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create positive environmental change in lasting ways. In this pivotal decade of climate action, we have strategically focused our organization’s expertise and resources to advance a sustainable, low-carbon and equitable future for our region and beyond. We do this by communicating an inspired vision and catalyzing and scaling high impact projects in four key areas: Green Homes, Green Transportation, Green Business, and Green Future.

We believe that impact starts with practical action on the ground, and that we can scale our impact through collaboration, building capacity and sharing resources with others. We also believe that low-carbon solutions must build communities that are more resilient to climate impacts and advance equity, inclusion and reconciliation.

The Board of Directors

EnviroCentre’s volunteer Board of Directors provides governance and oversight to the organization, contributing to business planning, organizational strategy, policy and compliance, financial stewardship, legal and ethical integrity and overall accountability. As a board member, you can expect to participate in quarterly board meetings, as well as some committee work. Meetings are held both in-person in Ottawa and remotely. Board members generally serve for a 3-year term, with the option of renewal.

The main responsibilities of the Board include:

  • Financial oversight: Review and approve EnviroCentre’s annual budget and business plan, audit reports, and material business decisions. Review quarterly financial statements and progress reports to ensure sound financial management.
  • Legal and risk management: Ensure that EnviroCentre complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, and that potential risks are identified and appropriately managed.
  • Governance: Develop and review organizational and Board policies. Participate in renewal of EnviroCentre’s strategic plan and ensure regular monitoring of its implementation.
  • Executive Director (ED) support and evaluation: Regularly review the ED’s performance and provide guidance and direction as needed.
  • Board development: Assist in recruiting new board members, ensure members receive appropriate onboarding and training, and participate in board evaluation activities.
  • Community engagement: Act as an ambassador for EnviroCentre, sharing information with stakeholders, partners, and the general public.

Benefits

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will join an energetic, engaged team who are committed to climate action, equity, justice and a future vision for Canada that catalyzes forward-thinking leadership and action. It’s also a fun, supportive and social group. The benefits include:

  • Impactful leadership: You will have the opportunity to contribute to and shape some of the highest impact climate action projects in the region in the areas of sustainable buildings, transportation, business and more
  • Professional growth: Grow your leadership, strategic thinking, financial and governance skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Network development: Work alongside other passionate individuals who share a common vision, and participate in community and board events to grow your professional network.
  • Knowledge development: Learn about the latest trends and solutions in climate action for the Ottawa region and beyond.
