BIPOC YOUTH RETREAT

Role: BIPOC Conservation Virtual Learning Retreat Participants
Project: Project Rooted Outdoors
Location: Greater Toronto Area, Ontario
Type: Educational opportunity

Project Rooted Outdoors's mission is to equip young people 18-29 from racialized communities in the Greater Toronto Area with the confidence, experience, and education to get exploring independently through BIPOC focused programming, workshops, mentorship matching, and learning expeditions. Outdoor recreation is a multi-faceted space where conservation, science, and social justice intersect. We strongly believe that by creating opportunities for Black, Brown, and Indigenous youth in a safe, and inclusive environment we can help them develop their love for nature first-hand while nourishing their mental and physical wellbeing.

We are hosting a virtual learning retreat from March 20, 2021, and March 21, 2021, for BIPOC youth, to build further on conversations about inclusion and equity and to draft a roadmap to create more inclusive spaces within nature/environmental organizations. We hope to translate the voices of BIPOC youth into meaningful change for the larger sector of conservation and outdoor recreation through the creation of a policy document.

This virtual learning retreat is funded by Ocean Wise through the Ocean Bridge program and led by three Ocean Bridge Ambassadors. Ocean Bridge's Ocean Wise program seeks to connect Canadian youth from different parts of the country and empower them to take action towards ocean conservation through service projects in their local community and nationally through two immersive learning expeditions.

As participation is limited, we are opening up applications to participate in our virtual learning retreat. Successful applicants will receive an email by February 15th, 2021 with details about programming and schedules.

Why participate?
We’re offering an immersive and interactive learning journey with activity-based workshops. There will be credit available for all participants to purchase equipment/outdoor goods of their choice to help assist with barriers to outdoor participation for BIPOC youth.

Meals will be provided through UberEats credit. All participants will receive a swag bag full of eco-friendly goods from local independent BIPOC businesses as well. Materials will be delivered to participants through a ‘contactless’ delivery.

Who can apply?
Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) youth from ages 18 - 29 and from the Greater Toronto Area. Please apply by February 5, 2021.
