Positions: Tour Guides - Island Interpreters!
Type: summer (university/college students or recent graduates)

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Friends of McNabs Island Society is hiring university/college students or recent graduates again this summer. The summer Island Interpreters will work 35 hours per week for up to 12 weeks from June to the end of August. The pay range is $18.00 - $20.00/hr depending on experience. The candidates must be 30 years of age or younger at the start of employment, and be current students or recent graduates. These jobs are funded under the Canada Summer Jobs program. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and legally entitled to work in Canada.

The job duties are varied and would be suitable for students or graduates from several disciplines including: environmental science, environmental design, biology, marine biology, marine affairs, recreation, education, horticulture, forestry, management, business, tourism, public relations, journalism, communications, planning, graphic arts, film and media studies, history, Atlantic Canada studies, indigenous studies or archaeology.

Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and/or French. They must be able to work as a team on McNabs Island as island interpreters or tour guides. They will be on McNabs Island 3-4 days per week including weekends. When not on the island, they will work from an office in the city.

Tour Guides – Island Interpreters must be physically fit and love being outdoors, even in the rain and cold. They must be able to walk carrying a backpack at least 10 km while leading guided tours. They must be able to meet the physical requirements of this job. When not on the island, the interpreters will manage social media, and research and update our interpretive and education materials.

Some of the job duties include:

  • Providing guided tours for McNabs Island visitors and youth groups,
  • Working on island maintenance projects such as island beach cleanups, and trail and garden maintenance,
  • Helping with the upkeep of the Island Teahouse Outdoor Education Centre,
  • Maintaining social media accounts promoting McNabs Island activities and events.
  • Developing interpretive materials that promote McNabs Island as an outdoor learning centre and nature park,
  • Researching and writing stories about McNabs Island for the Rucksack newsletter,
  • Updating our displays, interactive map and developing virtual tours.
