Position: Organic Vegetable Farm Worker
Type: paid full-time position; optional on-farm housing (see below)

The Kitchen Garden is currently looking for an experienced full-time, enthusiastic, hard-working individual to join our team starting in Mid-April until approximately Mid-November.

Who we are. The Kitchen Garden is a 1.5 acre organic vegetable farm located in Wilton, ON run by Evan Quigley and Megan Hamilton along with their infant son Espen. The farm is situated on 10 acres with wonderful biodiversity, deep sandy soils just 25 minutes by car from downtown Kingston. 2017 marks our 9th season in operation. With the help of our small hardworking crew we grow over 40 different vegetable crops which are direct marketed through our stall at The Kingston Public Market, our CSA, and to local restaurants. Our mission is to grow the best tasting, highest quality, nutrient dense organic produce as efficiently and productively as possible. A small, well managed farm can be incredibly productive!

We are happy to teach our employees all we know. By working at The Kitchen Garden, employees will learn about the day to day operation of an efficient, productive and profitable market garden. You will gain experience in planning and cost of production, building soil carbon and balancing mineral elements of the soil, utilizing biodynamic preparations to enliven subtle energies and applying foliar nutrition to strengthen the plants' natural disease and pest resistance. Evan has taught numerous workshops on topics from the business end to the production end of market gardening. Both he and Megan are happy to share their knowledge, experiences, and an extensive agriculture library. Our education method is very loosely structured. It is example and experience based. To make the most of this experience it takes a desire and initiative to learn and grow.

Work at The Kitchen Garden is diverse. Ranging from greenhouse production, field crop planting, weeding and harvesting, farmers markets, and building and repairing farm infrastructure. Employees are often called upon to do different and sometimes tedious jobs in all kinds of weather.

We use a tractor for bed preparation, mowing and heavy lifting but most of the work – from hoeing, to seeding, transplanting and harvesting is done by hand. Common tasks include:

  • Planting – hand transplanting, seeding with Jang, Earthway and Four-Row Pinpoint seeders, hand seeding in the greenhouse
  • Fertility – spreading compost, soil amendments, foliar spraying and fertigation
  • Irrigation – set-up and removal or drip tape and overhead sprinklers, hand watering greenhouse
  • Crop Protection – set-up, removal and venting of row covers, low tunnels, and high tunnels
  • Cultivating – wheel hoes, scuffle hoes, hand weeding, mulching, trellising, pruning
  • Harvesting – multiple days a week in peak season
  • Wash & Pack – washing, bunching, quality control, packing
  • Market - Saturday market help during our peak season July through October.

Schedule. Starting in Mid-April and finishing Mid-November, Monday to Friday 7:30am until 3:30pm each day. Lunches are unpaid. From July until the end of October you will work also work Saturday at our market stall in downtown Kingston. We try to keep reasonable hours, however in farming there are many events out of our control so days might end earlier or later depending on the weather and the need to finish large tasks.

Who are we looking for?

  • You should have at least one years experience working on an organic vegetable farm.
  • Ability to commit to the full season is a requirement. We cannot hire people who need to leave or cut back on hours in August or September due to school or other commitments.
  • A driver’s license with transportation is a must.
  • We care deeply about local organic food. You should too! An understanding of local organic food systems is encouraged.

Compensation. We expect a lot from our employees. In return we believe in offering a competitive wage, vacation time, bonuses and a great learning environment for those wishing to learn more about profitable small scale organic vegetable farming. Wage is negotiable and dependent on experience.

An all inclusive, private apartment can be provided on farm for a modest fee.
