GRANT WRITING / FUNDRAISING

Position: Assistant Grant Writer
Organization: Toronto Wildlife Centre
Location: Currently located in Downsview Park (North York) with plans to move to the Rouge National Urban Park (Scarborough near Steeles Ave. E. and Markham Rd.)
Status: Permanent, Full-time (Hybrid)

Job Summary

Reporting to the Grant Writer, the Assistant Grant Writer is an integral member of TWC’s grants team and will play a key role in TWC’s fundraising efforts. You will use your exceptional writing and editing skills to craft clear and compelling funding proposals, reports and letters of inquiry. This role demands the ability to work effectively within a team environment, where you will collaborate with program staff to understand their needs and synthesize them into well-written proposals for a variety of funders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft and edit funding proposals, letters of inquiry, and grant reports with precision and clarity, accurately reflecting TWC’s mission and values.
  • Synthesize program requirements and effectively communicate them in written proposals for foundation and corporate funders.
  • Work closely with the grants team to track important dates and maintain accurate grant-related information in a CRM (Client Relationship Management) software.
  • Stay abreast of fundraising trends and best practices in grant writing to continuously enhance proposal quality and effectiveness.
  • Research and gather external information and statistics relevant to grant-funded projects.

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field such as English, Communications, Environmental Studies, or Nonprofit Management
  • A minimum of 1 year professional experience in a writing or fundraising role.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent collaborative and team-work skills.
  • Ability to understand and precisely follow instructions and seek clarification when needed.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong knowledge of Southern Ontario wildlife and wildlife-related issues.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of donor prospect research platforms such as Grant Connect

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to spend extended periods sitting and using a computer.

Working Conditions:

  • Fast-paced office/hospital environment, with noise and the possibility of frequent interruptions.
  • This position requires working near materials and animals that may trigger allergic reactions.
