About Environmental Leadership Canada

Environmental Leadership Canada (ELC) is a Canadian registered charity with a mandate to educate and empower individuals who are concerned about the environment with a deep understanding of our political system and its decision-making processes. Through our work, we aim to build a new generation of environmental leaders and to boost the capacity of everyday Canadians who care about the environment to engage in our democracy.

ELC operates in a cross-partisan manner, acknowledging the significance of environmental leadership transcending political affiliations for lasting environmental change. We envision a future where the health of our planet becomes a central force in Canadian politics at all levels. This vision is realized through our commitment to building political engagement, knowledge, and leadership capacity among young environmental champions through programs like the Parliamentary Internship for the Environment, Municipal Climate Internship Program, and FLIP (Future Leadership in Politics) programming, and engaging environmental advocates and voters during elections and in between through training, debates, and educational events to build civic engagement and capacity to hold elected leaders accountable for their commitments (e.g. Every Day Advocates and Debates on the Environment).

Position Overview:

The overarching goal of the position is to enhance political literacy among environmentally-passionate youth, fostering their active engagement in the democratic process, in line with ELC's broader vision for enduring environmental change.

In the capacity of a dynamic Program Coordinator, the selected candidate will play a pivotal role in coordinating ELC’s annual Future Leaders in Politics (FLIP) Summit. Already having run for three successful years, the FLIP Summit engages about 200 youth across Canada annually, providing a platform for in-depth political and advocacy learning, bridging the gap between politics and environmental issues. This year’s event will focus on building knowledge and skills and mobilizing youth energy around the myriad ways that climate-concerned youth can engage in Canadian elections, from planning a debate to working or volunteering on a campaign to running for office and more. The Coordinator will also help to plan in-person event for Ottawa-based BIPOC youth and allies (aged 18-30) that delves into issues surrounding the intersectionality of climate, racial justice, and electoral politics, as well as an alumni reunion gathering of past Parliamentary Interns for the Environment.

Responsibilities

Working collaboratively and with supervision from other team members, the Program Coordinator will support:

Event Planing & Communications:

  • Create social media content/campaigns and other online communications
  • Develop and implement event work plans
  • Engage in outreach activities to secure partnerships, speakers, facilitators and event promotion
  • Coordinate logistics and related preparations for partners, speakers, and VIP guests
  • Evaluation and report on the effectiveness of the events, including data collection data and outcome measurement.

Research and Resource Development:

  • Conduct in-depth research on diverse themes within Canada's environmental and political landscape (e.g., youth voting demographics and priorities, running for elections, campaigning, Canada’s environmental priorities)
  • Generate backgrounders, toolkits and other resources for participants in ELC events and programming
  • Formulate and implement strategies to engage youth in programming and events, with a particular focus on equity-deserving communities.

The successful candidate may also support other ELC priorities as assigned.

Desired Skills and Experience

Note: It is not expected that the successful candidate will possess all of these skills and experiences.

  • Experience in events planning and management
  • Experience with youth-led or youth-focused initiatives (e.g. role in youth-led organization or networks, internship)
  • Experience generating social media strategies, and leading design and content creation
  • Possess strong organizational skills, high motivation and proactive problem-solving approach
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, politics (e.g. campaign volunteer, student union role, relevant degree, strong personal interest)
  • Knowledge about environmental policy issues and priorities, particularly climate and biodiversity crises, environmental justice, reconciliation, economic transition (e.g. experience in NGO sector, community advocacy, relevant degree)
  • Ability to implement an equity lens throughout their work
  • Experience engaging people toward a shared goal (e.g. community work, campaigns, youth mobilizations, customer service)
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently with minimal supervision, and collaborate effectively with team members
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including leading meetings and creating copy for digital content
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills to manage relationships with colleagues, partners and program participants
  • Bilingual (French/English) candidates preferred.

Additional Information

ELC is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome and encourage applications from equity-deserving communities, including BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, and persons with a disability. We are committed to making all positions accessible, welcoming, and inclusive for every team member.

As part of our ongoing efforts, ELC is actively working to ensure that every facet of our organization, including the team, board, advisors, and committees, reflects the diversity of the Canadian population. ELC is unwavering in its commitment to ensuring that our work actively contributes to dismantling systemic racism and oppression within the systems of government and legislatures where our focus lies. By addressing these issues at their root, we aim to foster positive change and contribute to a more equitable and just society.
