JOB OPPORTUNITY

Position: Education Coordinator
Organization: Scales Nature Park

Location: based near Orillia, Ontario
Housing: subsidized accommodations on-site

Duration: Immediate start, full time permanent as funding allows
Salary: $18/hour starting wage

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Deliver on-site and outreach educational programs with live animal ambassadors. related to native reptiles, amphibians, and nature.
  • Present targeted messaging to a variety of group sizes and levels of understanding
  • Set up educational displays and participate in delivering these events including preparing and cleaning materials
  • Communicate with clients via email, phone and other means regarding programming options, costs, and requirements
  • Schedule events, invoice clients, and record program relevant details
  • Allocate staff and resources to ensure a smooth operations
  • Assist with training and supervision of education and day camp staff and volunteers
  • Create documents related to staff training, including safe animal handling, display set up, etc.
  • Create interpretive signage, promotional posters, and similar products for the nature centre and educational events
  • Create new nature-based programming for onsite and outreach groups
  • Assist with the care and feeding of a large live collection of Canadian and exotic reptiles and amphibians (approximately 450 individuals of 70+ species)
  • Assist with other operational and maintenance tasks as required

Requirements:

  • Ability to thrive as part of a close-knit team in a live/work environment is important
  • Strong oral communication and writing skills, including presenting to large crowds
  • Comfortable and charismatic, on stage and on camera
  • Passion for working with members of the community and nature
  • Class G driver’s license and clean record, experience with larger vehicles or towing is an asset
  • Positive attitude and willingness to help people get over their fears are essential
  • Superb organizational skills, experience with spreadsheets in Windows and Android
  • Flexible scheduling based on client and animal needs; weekends and some evenings required
  • Working knowledge of the French language is an asset
  • Experience scheduling, training, and managing staff or volunteers is an asset
  • Ability to live in subsidized accommodations (shared, double) is an asset

Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site (quad or double bunk room). Candidates should enjoy working both indoors and outdoors, in a variety of settings. The ability to thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations and a live/work environment is important.
