Position: Greener Toronto Fund Intern

Introduction

The Greener Toronto Fund Intern will be employed by the Small Change Fund (SCF), in partnership with Green Neighbours Network of Toronto (GNN). The intern will help SCF and GNN deliver on the mission of the Greener Toronto Fund, which is to promote a greener, more sustainable Toronto by supporting work that protects, conserves, and enhances the local environment. The intern will do so by providing communications, outreach, engagement, and event support for GNN so it can better mobilize new volunteers to support grassroots groups and individuals working with GNN.

Summary of role

We are seeking an enthusiastic young person aged 18 - 29 who is passionate about the environment and community building and keen to learn new skills while working closely with experienced GNN volunteers and SCF professionals. Key focus areas for this role include communications, outreach, and volunteer engagement to advance the mission of the SCF/GNN partnership project, the Greener Toronto Fund.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications

  • Work collaboratively with GNN’s Communications team to provide a social media presence by designing and posting content to promote the work of our member groups, GNN, and other local news and events.
  • Coordinate content for the monthly GNN e-newsletter – an informative and engaging publication that keeps our members informed of green news, events, and opportunities for environmental action in Toronto and the GTA.
  • Amplify actions of GNN member groups by sending neighbourhood-specific e-blasts calling for volunteers and promoting events and initiatives.
  • Help create marketing and promotional materials for fundraising campaigns.
  • Track engagement across various platforms to help the Communications team make data-driven decisions.

Outreach and Engagement:

  • Help recruit, onboard, steward, and engage new volunteers.
  • Coordinate outreach volunteers for GNN tables at community events across the city.
  • Coordinate volunteers for GNN’s “Green Advocates in Every Riding” civic engagement project.
  • Track growth in GNN membership and successful volunteer engagement.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Required aptitude and skills:

  • Excellent in English, additional languages an asset, culturally sensitive.
  • Experience creating high-quality written, visual, and/or multimedia content.
  • Friendly, enjoys interacting with people.
  • Passionate about the environment and community-building.
  • Self-starter, able to take responsibility, manage time, and show initiative.
  • Able to research, collate, edit, and present information in an effective and eye-catching manner.
  • Resourceful and keen to learn new things.
  • Commitment to fostering teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions.
  • Relationship-building: Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of GNN.
  • Organizational skills: Creating long-term goals, setting priorities, developing a work schedule, monitoring progress toward goals.

  • Community engagement.
  • Volunteer coordination.
  • Organizing meetings and events.
  • Fundraising.
  • Social Media platforms.
  • Databases such as Airtable.
  • Newsletter platforms such as MailChimp.
  • Graphic design tools such as Canva.
  • Use of Google Workspace (Email, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides) and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Orientation and Training

You will work closely with the Chair of GNN on a day-to-day basis. You will receive ongoing onboarding, training, advice, and support from members of the GNN Steering Committee, GNN Communications team, and the GNN and SCF teams.

Time Commitment

This is a 35 hours/week full-time position at $20/hour plus 4% vacation pay, with a flexible work schedule. Duration is 6 months with a pending 6 mo extension subject to grant success. If preferred by the applicant, a part-time position may be arranged. Except for working at live community events (a few per month), work can be done online from home. You must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some evening and weekend hours.
