JOB OPPORTUNITY

Position: Climate Action Technician (5 positions)
Organization: Youth Climate Corps BC
Location: Squamish, BC

Schedule: 35 hours per week
Compensation: $25.68 hours per week, plus 4% vacation pay
Date Range: June to November

Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) is a youth-led climate action program that delivers tangible community benefits at the local level while generating momentum for a just and sustainable future across Canada. We provide young people with opportunities to make a difference in their communities while earning wages and developing skills that will prepare them for meaningful future work and engaged citizenship. Through our programs, young people will gain skills and training in climate careers, such as power-tool training, ecosystem restoration, building decarbonizing, supporting active transportation, and supporting vulnerable people through climate events. Our vision is about building young leaders who can communicate, collaborate, navigate barriers, and build capacity by embracing challenges as an opportunity to grow and learn. In the YCCBC, young people can improve their own lives while becoming part of something bigger than themselves.

The Squamish Youth Climate Corps program will work in partnership with the District of Squamish to complete important climate action projects. The six-month program will include training and work in:

  • Air sealing and energy efficiency
  • Climate plan outreach and engagement
  • Working with residents on promoting active transportation, such as biking and walking
  • Outdoor environmental youth programming
  • Zero waste initiatives
  • Many more!

Values:

YCCBC decisions are informed by these core values:

● Youth leadership: While older people have important contributions to make, solutions to the climate crisis must be shaped by those who will live the outcomes. We ensure youth perspectives are at the decision making table.

● Community focus: We are a national initiative that operates at the local level through projects identified as community priorities by local residents and leaders.

● Inclusion and connection: We understand climate change as deeply related to justice and oppression, so we strive to design programming to specifically address systemic issues, amplifying the leadership of marginalized people, and supporting Indigenous sovereignty leadership, as well as internally ensuring our workplace to be a safe and justice-seeking space.

● Innovative problem solving: We strive to make unique contributions to the Canadian climate movement and to local communities by tackling work that is important, but neglected, or facing barriers.

● Grounding in ecology and climate science: Our initiatives are guided by the best current science and strive to preserve and enhance the resilience and health of natural ecosystems alongside human needs.

Opportunity Description:

As climate change places increasing pressure on our global, regional and local ecosystems and communities, the need to address the climate crisis with meaningful action could not be more relevant. Harnessing the energy and ambition of young adults, the Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) program empowers young people to inspire and implement solutions to the climate crisis through employment, training and leadership development.

For this pilot, a cohort of five YCCBC Climate Action Technicians, led by a YCCBC Program Coordinator, will be based out of Squamish for six months. The program will involve initial training with support from the District of Squamish. Throughout the program, the YCCBC team will receive mentorship and ongoing leadership training from YCCBC staff and District of Squamish staff. The YCCBC Squamish program will mobilize communities towards community priorities and climate goals. The program will include the delivery of the Youth Climate Corps BC curriculum, which focuses on climate action, community leadership and workforce readiness. The crew will have networking, mentorship and education opportunities related to climate action in Squamish, and furthering their careers in the low carbon sector. YCCBC will work with partners to help identify next steps for the Climate Action Technicians to advance their education or careers in the low carbon sector.
