JOB POSTING / CO-OP

Position: Agriculture Sustainability Technician
Organization: InterraPlan Inc.
Location: Moberly Lake/Peace River Region, BC. Primarily on-site with live-in availability; possible for remote assignments and travel; BC/Alberta only applicants; preference for local and regional candidates

Primary duties (on-site location):

  • Provide hands-on support for various research and demonstration projects in small scale (solar, wind, ground heat storage) in small scale renewable energy, irrigation & food security greenhouse, garden, composting, orchard & berry production)
  • Assist with installation of eco-energy systems (solar furnace, climate battery, cold frames, wind turbine & solar water pumping)
  • Evaluate carbon management benefits of farm operations through data analysis, collection and reporting (compost, soil amelioration and planting trials)
  • Regular maintenance of food production plots (orchard, garden and berry plots) followed by harvesting, processing of marketing of cultivated and country plant foods
  • Take lead and/or assist with setup of berry, fruit tree & vegetable irrigation system
  • Serve as a technical resource assistant in environmental farm management consulting projects (water mgt, riparian assessments, grazing mgt etc)
  • Participate in both self-directed and available training activities on renewable energy, permaculture and carbon management

Secondary duties (remote option)

  • Create online (video, webinar) resources for demonstrating green household living & property stewardship
  • Organize public learning events including garden production, orchard production, interpretative botanical trail and basic land & water stewardship as time permits
  • Support development of online (video, webinar) resources for demonstrating green household living & property stewardship;
  • Promote further development of an "Eco-Enterprise Network & Directory";
  • Support research on community food, energy & water security and recycling;
  • Provide assistance with administrative office & organizational support functions;
  • Other activities as deemed capable to carry out by mutual agreement.

Training Qualifications: Preferably enrolled (currently or recently completed) co-op applied research program or other recognized technical post-secondary institution in a program related to the position at College, or University level; Preference for applicants from the Peace River region of northern BC or Alberta.

The preferred candidate will:

  • technical background, experience and demonstrated interest in renewable farm energy applications (solar installations, wind-mill and solar water pump assembly, irrigation systems)
  • be able to conduct safe operation with physical ability to use all field equipment for onsite activities (garden implements, brush cutters, power tools, post hole gas powered auger, rototiller, lawn tractor, quad 4x4
  • have access to their own reliable vehicle for work use with remuneration for expenses
  • able to accept on-site basic RV or shared accommodation for work fare exchange (1 day per week) and/or low rental rate
  • preferably with farm background and/or experience working in remote rural areas
  • demonstrated skills and experience on the job or farm in light construction, basic electrical, mechanical and/or millwright work
  • familiarity with WEB-site development/updating in WordPress program

Hours: total coop duration qualification (12-14 weeks duration, or 30-35 hrs/week)

  • Location: Moberly Lake (north-east BC) and remote office access as per mutually agreed workplan
  • Earliest Start Date (On-Site): May th - latest started date June 1st
  • Wage: $20-25/hr (incl benefits) subject to experience and career interests
  • Internet: Broad-band WiFi available and included for work and accommodation
  • Eligibility: Preference for candidates no older than 30 years of age and returning to full-time studies in fall 2024
