Property Description

The Arctic Chalet is a beautifully landscaped eco-friendly, non-smoking tourist establishment located near Inuvik in the Canadian Arctic, Northwest Territories. We provide beautiful cabin accommodations to our clients as well as rental cars, and we offer a variety of adventure tours.

General Work for Pay

We are looking for someone who is ambitious physically fit, honest and hardworking who would enjoy living and working in the Arctic for up to a year.  We would like to find someone, preferably, with some practical skills to help Olav with a variety of jobs.  We need workers that are flexible and willing to do any jobs that may be required in our business.  Duties include washing cars and preparing them for rental, doing trail maintenance, yard work and other general labour, and sometimes even helping with housekeeping.  A modest flat salary will be paid every month.  We do not pay by the hour.  The benefits that we offer are rewarding and are also a form of pay.  See the section on Benefits below.

Volunteering with the Huskies

Our beautiful White Huskies are very special and are a delight to handle.  They are friendly with people and well socialized so they are easy to handle.  There are currently 28 dogs that live in our unique kennel complex and we will be expecting some new pups this summer!

This position involves a willingness to help take care of our huskies and you will learn a lot. We will teach you how to train them individually and in teams and you will learn how to manage sled dogs.  All of our staff are passionate about interacting and working with these dogs which is the highlight of their day.  So if you love dogs and want to gain knowledge about northern huskies and if you would like to experience living in the Arctic, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Staff Accommodations

Accommodations are provided in exchange for working with the dogs so there is no rent to pay and no utilities.  WIFI is free!  Our staff live on the property in staff rooms or cabins that are fully furnished although basic. All of our staff rooms and cabins have heat and electricity and have access to a Bath House close by with showers and flush toilets and sinks. Staff also have access to our laundry facility for personal use at no extra charge. Staff cook their own food in a shared kitchen that is furnished.

Basic Requirements

  • Driver’s licence
  • Valid Canadian work permit (We do not do sponsorships)

Additional Requirements

Because we live in a natural environment close to nature, we would like to find staff who love the out-of-doors and who would enjoy spending their free time on the property and not in town socializing. Our staff must have a healthy natural-looking physical appearance. To meet our conservative standards, employees should practice good hygiene and be clean, neat and tidy, non-smoking, non-drinking and drug-free (includes the use of Cannabis). Please have a look at our WORK page on the web site below for more information.

Benefits

You will be given some unique opportunities while you are here.  (Tourists pay big money to do some of these things.)  One of the benefits of working with us is that we will take you with us on a few adventures during your stay, including a trip to the Arctic Ocean up on the Beaufort Sea and a hike up on the Tundra.  If you love hiking we will take you via the Dempster Highway to the Richardson Mountains for a hike in the mountains which may include a visit to the Yukon and the Arctic CircleCanoeing, fishing and walking our trails with a husky is available right here on the property for you to enjoy during your time off work.  Saturdays are usually a day off for staff to rest and enjoy some quiet time in nature.  In short, you will be rewarded with some great experiences!
